When Motivation Isn’t Enough

When I was dutifully going to the gym and had been for quite a while, a friend of mine who couldn’t make herself get there asked me how I got myself motivated to go every day.

She asked me to help her find the motivation so that she could to do it for herself.

My answer to her was that except for rare moments like a vacation that is coming up, a New Year’s Resolution or a dress you have to get into for a special occasion no-one is ever motivated to do what isn’t fun.

I told her I’m never motivated to go to the gym, I just go. Hardly anybody wants to go.

But what happens when we are super motivated to do something, but we don’t know what to do or how to start doing it?

That is totally frustrating.

I remember the days I would be super motivated to get the house cleaned up.

It usually would happen when I would leave a friend’s house that was really clean, and her home felt really good and super inviting.

I would come home with all this energy and motivation to clean up the house… But I lacked the skill to how to make it happen (although I didn’t know that at the time, I just thought there was something wrong with me because I couldn’t make it happen).

The reason for this topic of this email is because something just happened to me that reminded me of how horrible it feels to have all the motivation in the world to get something done, but still not be able to do it.

I just ordered a new planner, and I was excited to get started and all set up with my plans.

I had my highlighters, my sticky notes, my different color pens and I cleared two hours for myself to work on it.

I opened it up and I couldn’t start…

I read the instructions that were written in the beginning of it and even highlighted the important sections in case I had to go back and reference something. But when I was about to dig in, I still didn’t know what to do. I still couldn’t figure out how to get started.

The purpose of this planner was specifically for women who have online businesses.

There is so much to do and juggle, it’s impossible to keep it all in one’s head. Some things have to be done in stages, some things have to be done long in advance.

That’s why I needed a planner specific for business, so that I could plug in all the things that I need to do and just do each thing and know that I wouldn’t let any of the balls drop or leave anything out.

But here’s what happened… Past reading the directions, I still didn’t know how to use it.

There was something missing in the instructions. The planner has very specific pages to plan in very specific ways and I was at a loss. I needed more direction.

And so there I was… Super motivated! But without a clue as to how to proceed.

I felt exactly how I used to feel when I was crazy motivated to clean the house but after beginning (or trying to begin), I soon realized that I didn’t know how to and I often would make even more of a mess, pulling out more than I could put back.

Even when I did get on a roll with a room, by the time I got into the next one it wasn’t long before I got distracted by something and talked myself into starting again tomorrow, or I just couldn’t get myself to continue feeling the futility of it all.

The reason for that was I didn’t have any kind of plan. I didn’t know where to start and all I could see was EVERYTHING

Just like what I’m going through right now with this planner. There is nothing wrong with me because I can’t jump in! I just don’t know how to use it.
